Soft yet Fragile

Porcelain is a centuries-old material made from kaolin, a fine white clay first discovered in China.

It begins as a soft, moist clay that dries quickly when exposed to air.

The stages of Transformation

I work with black, white and pigmented porcelain, using different mixing techniques to create thin sheets of clay with unique patterns. I then cut out each piece according to the desired design.

Once dry, the porcelain becomes extremely fragile and must be handled with great care until it is fired in the kiln.

Fire and Earth

Fired at 1,250°C, porcelain is considered one of the finest ceramic materials, prized for its exceptional strength and purity.

Before firing, each piece is carefully sanded using progressively finer grades of sandpaper to achieve a perfectly smooth finish.

Unfired porcelain can be reclaimed and reused, helping to minimise waste. A beautiful aspect of working with this material!

Gold

Gold leaf delicately adorns the porcelain, like tiny petals highlighting the beauty and delicacy of each piece.

A protective coating is applied to enhance the quality and durability of the jewellery.

Some pieces are decorated with liquid gold lustre, permanently fused to the porcelain during a final firing at 800°C.
